Summer’s here and while school’s out, screens are in. Between video games, tablets, and streaming shows, kids tend to spend more time indoors during the hot Texas months. But too much screen time and not enough daylight can impact their vision, especially if they're at risk for myopia (nearsightedness).
Here are five simple ways to support your child’s eye health this summer:
- 20-20-20 Rule: For every 20 minutes of screen time, encourage your child to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. It gives the eyes a break and reduces strain.
- Get Outside Daily: Aim for at least 90 minutes a day of outdoor play. Natural sunlight helps slow the progression of myopia and gives their eyes a much-needed break from near work.
- Limit Recreational Screen Use: It’s tough, we know. But try setting screen time limits, especially for non-school-related activities. Use built-in screen timers or set tech-free hours in the house.
- Check Their Lighting: Make sure screens aren’t too bright or too dim. Position devices to avoid glare and encourage them not to use screens in the dark, which can strain their eyes.
- Book a Summer Eye Exam: If it’s been over a year since your child’s last eye exam, summer break is the perfect time to check in. Undetected vision issues can sneak up especially as screen habits change.
